I don't know anything about programming, but is there a way to set the priority level of a program when it is programmed?

I have noticed that since I loaded the Genome client .99 it will effect my computer usage. Running applications such as games now studder every once in a while.

This never happened with the .94 and .98 clients. It's bad enough that I have to actually shut it down when I want to play any high end 3D games.

I don't know what you can do in programming for priority but if you are running W2K you can use Task Manager to ensure it is set to "low" and if you are using W9x use TaskInfo 2000 (http://www.iarsn.com/download.htm)

Nice program, quite a bit like "top" for Linux. The client is set to "idle", so maybe it's something else. I'll have to shut down Zonealarm when I play a game as well, that's the only other new thing I've added since this problem started.

OK I think I missed something. How did we get from idle level of genome to playing a DVD?

I'm not aware of any differences between .99 and older versions that would change the effect on other programs.

Could it be that it is just at the beginning of a new protein? Apparently the filter process (counting up to the number of AAs before starting a sequence) is incorrectly set at more than idle priority. After a few minutes that problem goes away, however.

Another possibility is if you have really small RAM but that is rare today. (I've got a few old 32M machines that I see that problem on, even with some tweaking, but then I don't try to run 3D games on them either.)

Siggy:

He was just mentioning that DVDs may not play good if you are running the genome client set at a "high" priority.

Bruce:

I screwed up kinda. I only have the .99 clinet installed on my other machines. My main computer still has the .98 client. I think you are correct and the slow downs may only be a memory thing. I have 256MB of PC133, but with the games I play, that sometimes is not enough. I am also going to try and redo my swap file onto my 7200rpm HD to try and speed that up.

I did not see any difference between the .98 and the .99 as far as speed. I had a 99aa on my computer and timed it (-nonetting) then switched to the .99 and (-nonetted) some more on the same gene. It had absolutely no difference.

You might compare notes with Skzdalimit when he gets back. He did some benchmarking and reported the Windows client was faster. I don't remember the details on the Linux client. THe biggest thing here is the degree of optimization that the compiler applies.

This thread started out discussing the impact on OTHER programs running at the same time. That's more dependent on it being idle priority -- which has not changed AFAIK -- except possibly for the initial filtering of the rotamers.lib, which somehow didn't get set to idle priority. At least it's on the to-do list.

Umm, don't you mean when you want to play games on your NEIGHBOR'S computer? Surely you're not wasting precious Genome cycles on personal entertainment! Can't you be banished from the team for that? ;)
