4 of my 5 VP6’s don’t do too much now or wont be doing much very soon anyway, at the moment I have W2K on them.

I am only going to be running G@H or S@H, would I benefit from Linux?

Please bear in mine I have NEVER seen a Linux System in my life!!

Cheers.

PS Sorry if this has been covered:o

I beleive so. I am sure Jodie would be more than willing to share her brutaly stripped kernel with you! The 0.99 client is still in question, my first unit crunched with the 0.99 client crashed, none since (over 250 genes since).

IMHO, do it!:D :D :D

If you aren't going to use those machines Dave for any real purpose other than Genome, Linux will be perfect. You can strip the GUI and run from just the commandline. This will almost certainly give quicker processing time. You can also run the client at the highest priority to gain a little more. Once you get your head around *nix commands, it is pretty easy....I am running 2 1500MHz+ T-Birds with Red Hat 7.1. One of them runs from the command line as it is only a genome cruncher and the other has a full gui environment but when I leave this machine, I unload the gui and run from the command line.

Above all else, you will have fun learning a new OS and all it's little quirks :D

Cool Phil thanks, wots the security like? Don’t want any Trojans or virus; dose it run ok on duals?? Will it be ok with overclocking @ 150 MHz FSB?

Sorry for all the questions, I will setup one PC first and once I get the hang of it I will put it on the other 3….I know newbe…..newbe….newbe!!!!:o

Is that jodie's 9 lines of kernel goodness? Or does she have one that does a little more than bootup :D

Trojans I thought that was.......

Well lets just hope it means something else on a computer. I mean you ppl have been using some iteresting things to put computers together, but this one definitely takes the cake. :D

Ok dustin, you might actually be able to oc a lil better, but for now leave it the way it is. Dual stuff runs great in linux. Its pretty easy to set up just for G@H.

You don't need anything extra, just network, basic stuff, and NO X windows or Gnome or KDE :D

You should be replying to Dave... But anyway, I've been thinking of running Linux on my dedicated Genome boxes.

Security is good and easily configured at boot time. Red Hat 7.1 has a firewall (packet filter) built in and is easily configurable. I have some of my ports open, but only to 2 IP addresses. This means my box is secure unless you are using my workstation in another room :D Running dual is no problem at all....look at Jodies boxes...er machines , most are dual and are running fine. For overclocking, if windows can do it so can Linux.

If you don't want to, you don't even need to get your hands "dirty"...you can install the OS, and then install a small program called Webmin. You can now access your machine anywhere via a web browser and configure literally everything....even reboot or shutdown. Linux also makes it easy to keep your clients up and running. With a little help from dnar, I have a script that is sceduled to run every 15 mins. It checks to see if the client is running. If not, it will move the current work unit to a new dir and compress it for sending to Stefan. Then it will restart the client. I can now just forget about those 2 T-Birds as they will look after themselves.

It really is good fun learning all of the possibilities and Linux is ideal for just crunching machines.

Dave, you can download it for FREE (imagine that) from www.redhat.com. It helps if you are on cable (which I think you are) as it is 2 cd's worth. Download Accelerator Plus is recommended :)

Of course you are missing something  http://www.redhat.com/download/howto_download.html

If you want, you can pm me your home address and I will copy you my CD's. Linux is open source software, that means it is totally legal to copy and distribute

I can go you one further... If you wanted a stripped down system that's only a few MB and can be up and running in a few minutes, already optimized, I can toss mine out onto my website for you, then talk you through the rawwrite to create a boot disk for it, or you can install it over windows, either way.

Dnar, how's peanut do for g@h? I haven't looked at it yet.

dnar

Peanut is fine. It is an older kernel (2.2.19), very stable, very lite.

Jodie
22nd August 2001, 02:35
The 2.2 kernels seem to be a bit slower than the 2.4 kernels in my testing...

Hey Jodie thanx, do you think it would be better for me to have a look at wot Phil sends me first? Just so I can get an idea of wot its all about, or would it be better whacking you stuff over W2K?
Boot disk, so if I have W2K on a PC and install Linux over it I don’t need a boot disk (boots from the original windows install right?) but if I format I need something to boot the system up with (just once and that’s it? or every boot?).

Sorry to be a pain it’s just I have no idea about Linux…..

So my options are;
1) Put Phil’s on and play
2) Whack yours over W2K
3) Put Phil’s on play then whack yours over it? (Any benefit apart from me learning?)
4) Any others?

Thanks for you help:)

This will be for one PC to start with then upto 3 or 4 if that makes any difference to my options I don’t know?!?

I am looking into building a custom Distribution, "DnarLinux" for the sole purpose of crunching genes. My requirements are:

- Fast

- Small

- Boot floppy OS

- NFS

Will keep you all posted, any help, input, assistance greatly appreciated! Helpfull documentation (http://www.netspace.net.au/~gok/power2bash/buildMin/buildMin.html)

Dave, Jodies solution is an excellent one, but you will not really get to play about with all that Linux has to offer. Jodie's Linux install is heavily optimised (read stripped down) and there are no nice GUI to play with. I would install the full Red Hat package on one machine and have a play to see if you like it and you can also learn how to use the command line. If you feel comfortable with this, then install Jodie's solution on the rest (or even all) of the machines.

Linux has a steep learning curve, but once you get used to it you start thinking "how could I have done this in Windows". For example....I was messing with some beta software the other day and it crashed and took out all keyboard and mouse control. In Windows you would probably have just switched the machine off. What I did was connect to the crashed computer via telnet from another machine and then killed the run away beta program. I then re-started the gui and I was back up and running without having to re-boot.

To be perfectly honest, you'd not want to run my distro for ANYTHING other than genoming. It's goal is to be small, tight, fast, optimized strictly for fpu access. For the PIII version it's compiled ONLY for the PIII and won't run on anything else. For the AMD it will ONLY run on the latest AMD chips. I've got all the P4/SSE2 optimizations dialed in for when I get a couple of P4s to play with. If you want to play with Linux - this isn't the distro for you, Phil's sending you exactly what you need! By the same token, my distro averages 20% faster than RedHat7.1 for genoming. But your hardware has to be bone generic. EIDE HD, IDE CDROM, PS2 keyboard (no mouse support) no sound, no usb, text only, terminal only font, no automounting, optimized for NetGear and Intel Pro100 networks. That's it.

Hi Jodie, I would appreciate a copy for the AMD to have a play with if you have the time. I am running on my Genome Crucher:

AMD T-Bird @ 1500MHz, Iwill KK266-R mobo (VIA 133A chipset), 256Mb Crucial CAS2, Netgear FA311 NIC, Matrox G450, 15Gb HD, no floppy or CDROM (I rob them from another machine as needed.)

Sure I'll drop it on the web server late tonight (PDT) when I get home from this trip. It's just going to treat that G450 as a generic textual video card, kinda a waste. Go find a $5 vga card... [grin]
