I have access to several computers. Where do you want my processing time to be used?

Welcome! Who are you? How did you find us? Oh, have a beer!

As to where to devote your efforts, I gues that's a question of what sort of effort you want to devote.

Distributed Folding: runs nicely off-line, same work is run for a period of time (currently a week) and then new work is given out, all work must be turned in when the new work is available. Project is still really in beta so there are occasional hiccups.

Folding at Home: off-line is awkward, new work constantly available. Project is well-established and very reliable.

Those are the two main projects we're doing. There is a baby team doing the BOINC-based Predictor at Home which is an alpha project so seems to have constant outages. If you want to run Predictor, I would suggest running one of the other two as well to take up the cpu slack when Precitor is off.

In terms of position, helping with DF means a long chase with those ahead. Being near the top of the tree makes climbing more difficult. In FAH, we're a lot further down (it's a much bigger tree!) so climbing is easier and extra help could make a bigger difference. Predictor is so new, extra help would be very welcome.

Welcome Oligo!!! Mike is far too responsible to tell you what he really thinks, which is that EVERYONE should be doing DF. I am under no such constraint. DF is the way to go. Of course the F@H branch of TGC will tell you exactly the opposite (if they aren't being overly polite). I wouldn't pay attention to them. They're biased in favor of F@H because thats what they do. I am not biased. My perspective is pure, clean, sparkling.

I found you guys through grid.org ... No one interested in doing that? Ah, doesn't really matter.

How do I get F@H to run as a service without any gui stuff? I'm on net 100% of the time. I could probably swing 50+ machines where stability, thus F@H, is the number one priority. I've got 10 hooked up to grid.org right now and can retask them.

Welcome to TGC! Here's one of the (very old) threads I tracked down about running F@H as a service:
http://www.thegenomecollective.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1724&highlight=firedaemon

A google search on firedaemon & running folding@home as a service will yield more than a few results. I haven't used it myself, but some here have. :)

Some people prefer to use the MicroSoft routines to create a service - - and that's another possibility. You can find an number of threads on that topic over at folding-community.org if you search for "srvany" which is the routine found on the MS utilities disk.

(With the exception of one forum for FAH teams, the folding-community.org is completely team-neutral, so you can get a lot of good advice as long as you come back here to talk about TGC-oriented issues.)

Yeah, so I haven't changed much over to F@H, but here's what's up with my grid installations:
