View Full Version : Poweruser Network Tools
HI guy's and gals, here are my all time favourite network tools for your enjoyment:
Web Browser: Opera 5 (http://www.opera.com/)
The fastest browser on the planet... Java is in the pipeline...
HTML Editor: Quanta 2.0 (http://quanta.sourceforge.net)
Clean, inbuilt browser, file tree, syntax highlighting, HTML outline, nice IDE.
News Reader: PAN 0.9.6 (http://www.superpimp.org/)
Simply rocks.... 0.9.6 is the most stable IMHO 0.9.7 crashes for me :(
Email Client: Sylpheed 0.5.0pre3 (http://sylpheed.good-day.net/)
Miltiple accounts, merges local mail mailboxes etc etc
FTP Client: gFTP 2.0.8 (http://gftp.seul.org/)
It works, what can I say.
Download Manager: Downloader for X 1.2.7 (http://www.krasu.ru/soft/chuchelo/)
The closest thing to GetRight I have seen. It can monitor your clipboard and pickup downloads from any browser.

Darn! But what else did you expect Phil :D
I knew I should have configured Opera to masquerade as IE...... (Yep, Opera can lie, Netscape, IE or anything!).
That can't all be me, can it ? I am not the only Opera user am I?
F*#@ if I am, get over to Opera and grab the Browser peeps! The Windows version is even better than the Linux one.... Mail & News clients built in. MUCH FASTER THAN MOZILLA - NETSCAPE - IE.
[switch opera to netscape stealth mode]

Well I got Opera downloaded and installed. Man is it fast! I am really diggin this. I tried the windoze version a while back and thought it was cool, but I couldn't let go of netscape. I think the Linux version is better than the the one for that other OS, ;) except for the lack of Java. But I can get used to it.

Pretty good huh. Most peeps rave about Mozilla.......
Play around with your cache settings:
I'm on string and tin can connection here, so I setup heaps of cache for images. Opera takes a little setting up, but man! U have Synchronous DNS turned on, just curious. In my Windows days, that had to be on. Mine is off now. Like the HOTLIST? U can show/hide with each click on the toolbar.
One thing I like aslo is all the progress indicators, and the fact that U see stuff as it dowloads the page. I hate Netscape way of "get something, wait to piss off the user, get a bit more, wait again, show the page"......:D
Try this one: Window->Special-History. You can set the history size too!

Yea, I have been using Mozilla up until last night, when I closed it out and not only did it close Mozilla but it bombed my whole X-windows session and left me staring at the command line. Definately not ready for prime time.

Yea I need to play around more with the settings, most are at default for the moment. But so far I like. It sounds like leaving Synchronous DNS off is better for performance, so I have not tried turning it on yet. I'm on a cable modem so I haven't really noticed a whole lot of performance problems anyways. :D
I'm gonna play with the settings some more tonight.

I'll second that one! I used Netscape from the very early days, I cant even remember what it was called back then.....
I upgrade 4.76 to 6 and hit the roof!!!!! [delete netscape mode commence] The programmers left the hand brake on!!!! :D
When you download the Linux veriosn of Opera, you have 2 verions 2 choose from:
1. Statically Linked - Does not require "qt" libraries (KDE).
2. Dynamically linked - requires "qt" libraries (KDE).
The statically linked verion is much bigger, at around 2 megs from memory
:D Even though I have QT2.2, I still like the idea of using the static version, it is self contained. QT is on my system, but I have blocwn away KDE....
Mosaic! Thats what it was called - I think????

Mosaic was produced by NCSA.
The guy who wrote it for them Marc Anderson (from memory) left the NCSA shortly after and went on to start Netscape Corp with a buddy of his.
You will find that pretty much all browser can trace their origins back to Mosaic someway.
Microsoft even give credit where it is due in IE. A look at Help | about with give you the following.
Based on NCSA Mosaic. NCSA Mosaic(TM); was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
It's little snippets of info like this that make me think my 6-7 years in the Internet Industry were not wasted

I just dll'd Staroffice to give it a try and see if I would like it any prior to installing Linux on another box. It's not bad but it will take some getting used to after all of those years using Microsoft Office. Next up to try Opera for Windows to see if I like it. Trying all of the different programs in Windows format before I commit to Linux.

mate, even if you choose to stay with Windows, using StarOffice and Opera, you will be a happier chappy!
StarOffice is huge, let me warn you... It requires oodles of memory. Shame you cant just run the Word Processor alone....
In Linux, there are other office apps to use, Gnumeric (Spreadsheet) is totally Excel compatible and looks and feels like it (less the Excel bugs).
WordPerfect 8 is what I use for docos, (always been a WP man anyway) and WordPerfect 2000 is also available (actually a Windows porgy running with Wine Windows emulator).

hehe. Not worried about memory on this machine. It has 768mbs of PC133 in it running win2k Professional. Opera 5.12 is being downloaded as we speak. The wife is not a big fan of IE. and I don't like netcrap so maybe this will be the compromise that we've been looking for.

Hmm Opera seems fast but I'm having trouble with it recognizing the password that I type in for the forum. IE accepts it just fine but it's not working for Opera???
