View Full Version : Losing some horsepower for two days - Sigh.

Jodie
23rd August 2001, 13:32
I'm losing about 3Ghz of PIII's for a couple days - I'm setting up a network for this due-diligence. I'll have them running no-net on one of the two processors in one machine, so it might be only a couple G, but still - sigh... I can't buy machines to replace them fast enough to make a difference... Losing a dual PIII-1G and a single PIII-1G. Hopefully that's all. I might have to donate this machine to the cause for a day, a dual 1.13G:rolleyes: :( :( :(

What? You have a machine that can run genome, but isn't....
And to think I thought you were dedicated. ;)

I hope you get it sorted out easily.

I know I know. . . But, hey, if we close this deal I'll have a nice lump of money burning a hole in my pocket... I'll tell you what - I'll demand an extra $20k of bonus if we close it, and sink that into more G@H processing power - how does that sound? BTW, how much faster do you reckon those P4-1.7's you have are, compared to a Tbird?

Jodie
23rd August 2001, 14:04
I guess the question would be: 15 P4's or 20 TBirds? :D

LBaker

I think I'd go for 20 duel athlons with the 20k :D :D You go girl ;)

Sounds cool ;)

I don't know how they compare, but here is some data I just got from my 1.7P4:

59aa - 4:41
75aa - 7:17
98aa - 11:08

Maybe someone could pull some similar aa times from their .gah files on a t-bird.

Jodie
23rd August 2001, 15:15
5:45 for a 68aa on a Tbird 1.33/1.4 OC running Linux.

10:48 for an 89aa on a Tbird 1.334 (according to Linux - not OC'd)

I'm guessing they're not THAT far off... Hmm, now let's look at the 1.13

9:02 for a 68aa... WHEW! Wow!!! Stunned! Counting protiens on the linux box is a pain in the butt in the text window... Going crosseyed... Think I need to write a script to look at them...

Ummm, ok, you tell me where to find a dual Tbird machine for $1000 and I'll buy 20 of them...:p

Jodie
23rd August 2001, 15:21
78aa on the 1Ghz is posting 11 HRS, 10MINS!!! OUCH! YUCK!

It's a wonder I'm doing as well as I am... YICK!

Actually, it looks pretty consistant from the P3-P4 considering clock-speed.... Clock for clock, the Tbirds definitely rock.

I use Word to count the protien strings.
Just paste the string into a new doc, and use the document properties to tell me the character count.

If you could write an app that would get aa sizes and times, that would be fantastic.

Dustin
23rd August 2001, 15:35
That's some pretty interesting numbers. Everyone has said the P4 is faster, but I don't have any personal data to back that up.

I hope you two get the same AA on the P41.7, and The Tbird1.4.

I would like to see some solid numbers, so we can put this mystery to rest.

Well, don't think you can get an assembled system for that price but

tyan mb-$215
2 1.2 mp athlons-$326
case-$100
hd-$100
256ram-$70
video card-$50
Total- $861

Make that 23 k7 duallies :D :D

Linux - no problem... Windows - maybe bigger problem... Guess I could write a script that uses the Cygnus tools that run under windows...Sure, awk, grep, sed... Shouldn't be a problem. Or maybe [shudder] Perl.

It's a 1.3 overclocked to just over 1.4. I'll go through my file and find aa's that match his, as well as the exact clock speed of my oc'd 1.3

Checking prices now... Will they handle 1.4's? I'll check that too. 'cause if that's the case, they'll be even less expensive than that...

HD - have lots of those (-100)
case - $12 + $45 powersupply - $57 (-43)
Video card - arf? These are number crunchers - $7 ;) (-43)

subtotal (-186)

Now they're down under $700? That's tough to fathom!

Jodie
23rd August 2001, 16:16
Hmmm...

Tyan S2462UNG dual AMD K7
MSRP: $499 Wholesale: $407

AMD Athlon MP 1.2GHz (266MHz)
MSRP: $258 each Wholesale: $194 each

Where'd you find your pricing? My vender is usually pretty good about this....

Just Mobo and two processors comes out to $800 by my count...

LBaker
23rd August 2001, 16:37
I just went by the lowest price on pricewatch www.pricewatch.com. Don't think they have the 1.4 mp cpu out yet, but soon. From what I've read the mp chips are the way to go for speed!

MechCD

Dude, $50 for a vid card? to run genome at home? go for $10 a vid card....

You might be able to get 100fsb versions cheaper, and then lower the m,ultiplier and up the fsb to make it a 133 fsb cpu without overclocking (all 1.2ghz and up are unlocked)

Dually boards are expensive, the CPUs should be pretty cheap

I get $500 for the tyan and $185 apeice fir the 1.2ghz MPs

Prices are from www.mwave.com

Bulk oreders may reduce the price. Combos might make it cheaper too

LBaker
23rd August 2001, 17:20
Like I said I went by the prices on pricewatch. I agree about the video card, just used $50 as a median price. If you want to go with the regular k7 you can build a kick arse system for $400 or less.

Jodie
23rd August 2001, 17:42
Wow... You're right... Several companies have them below wholesale... My apologies! $215-240...

MicroPro, Monarch and PCNation... $163-175 each for Processors (1.2MP)

At its cheapest (with the stuff I have around)

mobo 215
Procs 326
ram 37
c+ps 45

$623 Problem is, they'll only sell you one or two at that price... Of course, if I hit ten of them. . . .

Of course, I can build single 1.4s all day long for $300. . . . $6000 gets me twenty of those... Hmmmmmm 60x1.4 - that's tempting... Add say my five fastest machines to that, 65 machines 12Ghz + 84Ghz = 96Ghz... THAT'S tempting...

Jodie

My creditcard is feeling healthy. Think I'll order the parts for 10 1.4's right now... Deal close or no...

I've got 2 (two) 1.2 T-birds on Iwill KK266 boards with tinybga Kingmax ram...overclocked to 1425 ( 9.5 multi, 150 FSB )..

98aa ..11hr 10 min to 10 hr 50 min
running -nonet seems to vary with the same gene v.99 client

86aa .. 8hr 20 min to 8hr 40 min
91aa .. 9hr 20min to 9hr 50min
different machine, same setup, v.99 cli, just depends on the random number...ie a low random # seems to run faster than a hi random #......go figure..

you might try newegg.com, I've bought from them before and they are in your backyard I think jodie...pretty good prices on some things..but checvk it out they always seem to have a few prices a bit to high....pick and choose time...

Don't forget you need "registered RAM" and that special 460 watt PS to make the Tyan Thunder K7 come to life....

I would not purchase the 1.2GHz MPs... I would use the 266FSB 1.4GHz instead until AMD releases faster MPs. They will work until the faster MPs are out. Better price /performance with the 1.4 T-birds.

wbierman
23rd August 2001, 21:20
I'm seeing a 99aa take 11.5 hours on a T-bird OCed to 1.1Ghz.

Jodie
23rd August 2001, 22:17
Any problems with running two 1.4's? Any reason not to? Actually, I'm more inclined to buy single 1.4's as I can build them for less than a dual. If you're building 20 it starts to add up.

wbierman
24th August 2001, 02:28
Aa the reviews I have read say it is OK to run the 1.4s in the Thunder K7. Single mobos are cheaper to put together.

Did you check out the Unisys ES7000?

at the risk of sounding snooty - I know shoes - as long as they're made in italy... Farragamo, shudini - those I know... ;)

Ouch.... that first picture sent a chill down my spine! The others were heavy on the heels...how tall are you? (You don't have to answer) I'm guessing under 5'5".... just a hunch.

Back to Icon.... so professionals don't make statements??? My wife wears them... she manages Kaiser Permanente' National Legal Department.. admins and attorneys... that is a pretty stiff group on most days...

I'd wear them but my feet are too big, size 13 with a high instep. I love the Italian designers like Faradinni but alas the Italians have small feet...

5'9" and change. Size 7.5 US.

And I am a bit surprised that the legal eagle type would get away with the Icons...

I shrink got me started in the higher heels... I was always self concious about my height. She tried for aversion therapy - wearing 3+ inch heels. Turned out I liked 'em. [cackle]

OK put on adult hat.....DON'T chew your nails!!! Bad Jodie..... How about working on that proxy program..... that will take your mind off work or you could shut your eyes and imagine being anywhere on this planet... anywhere... where would you be?

I'll go first...

Completely alone with a cloudless ski, a full moon laying down looking up at the stars in Monument Vally....

Jodie

Monument Valley is awesome. But I'll go for El Granada/Half Moon Bay, CA. On the rocky shore ocean. Think I'll go to bed and imagine that... Little biofeedback couldn't hurt at this point.. I need to be up and packing in 4hrs... NIGHT! Thanks again!
