As title, is there a suitable replacement for Window's Hyperterminal? I need to access a device via the serial port and am unsure how to accomplish that in Linux.
Any help is appreciated.

Checkout minicom. Minicom has been bundled with RedHat/Fedora for many years, not sure about SuSe.
Only bugger is, it doesn't provide all the bugs Hyperslug does. ;)
You need to create a default profile by running as root, although I simply run as root when needed.
su <passwd>
minicom
candy.

Cheers, I do have that installed but can't connect to my gizmo. What is the device name for the "COM" ports ;). /dev/modem doesn't cut it. I guess I should get off my lazy ass and have a look in my "Running Linux" by O'Reilly book that has been gathering dust for years.

Aha, page 535: COM1 usually = /dev/ttys0
:D

I don't think minicom is going to work as it is trying to dial a modem. I want to connect to an AP22 performance meter (http://www.race-technology.com/WebPage2/Products/AP22/AP22Home.html) to download the saved data. It is quite easy with Hyper terminal in all that needs to be done is select the COM port and set the speed etc....115.2K, 8N1, no hardware or software flow conrol. Click capture and then set the AP22 to download - job done.
Back to google.

I use minicom to configure routers, and to monitor async protocols all the time. In fact just today, to debug a protocol driver I wrote for the new Sony LCD projectors.
Direct connect is no issue.
CTL-A Z is your friend.
"O" for Options, set your com port, baud rate, parity etc.
Without dialling, your online / direct connect all the time. CTL-A Z then S for download. Select the protocol, file and woosh.

Ahh, I see. I had set all of the options but I was getting nothing. I also tried CuteCom but the same thing. IIRC, I had to use a USB > Serial convertor as I couldn't get anything from the on-board serial port. I'll go and double check the BIOS to make sure it is enabled.

LOL....I must have a dody serial port on my machine. I plugged the AP22 into my duaghter's machine and used minicom. All my data downloaded fine.
Cheers!
