OK I figure it was better to put this under hardware. I have the Harddrive out. It is made by Conner the model is CP-3411. I believe it is a 40 meg. There are pins for 4 jumpers. If I recall there use to be 2 but now I only have one. (it has been a few years since I have messed with this machine) the 4 sets of jumper pins are labeled as follows;
HSP
C/D
DSP
ACT
Anyone have any thougths on which should have the jumpers?

I did not find your exact model (This happens with OEM drives.) at the Seagate website (Who purchased Conner Peripherals.). They did have a few drives with the same four jumpers as your model though, and they were all set the same way. To set a Conner Peripherals ATA HD with these jumpers:
Master - Jumper "C/D" and "DSP"
Slave - Nothing jumpered
Single ATA drive - Jumper "ACT" and "C/D"
Have fun Siggy

Thanks Rick. I only have the one drive so that rules out the slave. What is the difference between a single and a master?

Course I have also checked everyboard and modem I have lying around and can't find another jumper. Can I have it as a slave if it is the only one?

Nowadays nothing, with older HD's it had to be specified "stop here" and "don't look for any more drives". That's what the "act" jumper does for you.
So if the HD is the only drive on the channel (That one data cable.), and you don't have a CD-ROM attached to the same cable, set it to the "single drive" by jumpering "C/D" and "ACT".
Cya
P.S. With the old BIOS, you probably cannot set it to "slave" if it is the only drive. New BIOS' can ignore the jumpers and set it correctly.

Another tid bit of info...
If you cannot find a jumper, you can short the pins together with a piece of tinfoil :)

It won't boot as a slave. You can use foil on the pins as a jumper cap. Be sure to only short out two pins though!

The machine will not boot if it is set to slave. If you want pm me your address and I'll send you a couple jumpers. Get into your bios and check if you can change the boot options. I doubt it but maybe you can tell it to boot to the slave drive.

I know it's hard to get in there, so try it this way...
1) Roll up a sloid tube of foil.
2) Flatten it a little into an oval shaped tube.
3) Cover it with scotch tape.
4) Cut it to length.
5) Poke 2 holes into it with a darning needle.
(Watch the fingers :) )
6) Shove it over the pins.

Too late. I tried the foil and could not keep it secure. So I grabbed a paperclip, laid it on its side so it would pinch on the pins, rapped it in tape an viola.....It actually works!!!!!! You guys are the best.......Now I need to go see if I have another monitor in the garage.....This one only works if I hold the button in....good for short time looking but really hard to type that way.
BRB...I have to go scavanger hunting......

OK found another monitor but this one is going crazy too. Maybe its the video drives???? Maybe this old 386 can handle the monitors! Is that possible?
Dustin

It could be video drivers, but more likely the refresh rate is set wrong. Can you read it while it's booting up? If so, boot it in safe mode, and lower the refresh rate/ resolution.

Err that's a 386. Are you running Win3.0?

No I don't think it has windows on it. i think it is DOS. I got the monitor working. Now there is a problem with the keyboard. All the keys are working except the ESC key. I keep going into the utilities but I cant get out of the window. The screen says it is using PowerMenu 4.11 copyright by Brown Bad Software. Any thoughts?
siggy

p.s. My options under utilities are:
Help
Disk Manager
File Locator
System Info
Map of Progs
Window to DOS
Printer Stat
RAM Status
Time Set
New Date
Colors
Options
Exit
Any guesses as to were to start?

BrownBag Software was one of the very first menu systems for DOS that actually worked. It is based mostly on bat files. You didn't have to remember what to type to get all your programs to run.
You do need ESC, though.

Only if I open a menu...I need it to get back out of the menu. But that is pretty much it. From what I can tell.

OK I am going to give the 386 a rest. Now that I have it running. Is Linux going to fit on a 42meg HD. And how will I get in on there? I have a 5" and a 3'5" which is probably a 720 instead of a 1.44 I think the modem is probably a 300 or 900 baud.
Oh well...will think on it later.

Boy, does this thread bring back memories. My grandpa used to have a 386. Kept it in mint condition and waxed it every Sunday. Long after they introduced the electric computers he stuck by his baby. "Son," he used to tell me, "you can keep your newfangled electrics. They ain't worth the plastic they're molded of. I can overclock mine 'til the cows come home or the coal runs out. Mark my words, boy. They'll come back to steam power, sure as shootin'." Three days later the boiler blew. Took out half of Leisure World. He always said he'd bust 40 MHz or die trying.
siggy, you be careful with that thing.
