That's a good question! I can proudly say that I've never owned a Celeron, or a Duron!:D For that matter, I've never owned a K5, or a K6 either. I've built all of the above, but never wanted to own any of them.;)

And the best local prices... Kingston, Canada!
$68 - Athlon 1GHz 266 FSB Sock A £75 = $108 $129.00
$73 - Athlon 1GHz 200 FSB Sock A £80 = $115 $142.00
$61 - Athlon 950 200 FSB Sock A £77 = $111 $N/A
$57 - Athlon 900 200 FSB Sock A £56 = $81 $102.00
$91 - Duron 1GHz n/a n/a
$56 - Duron 950 £68 = $98 n/a
Duron 900 $108.00
Prices in red are UK prices. Inclusive of VAT but not delivery.
Prices in blue are Canadian dollars and do not include taxes.
I guess the real question for me would be... What will OC better and result in better performance? The "old" 900 Athlon or the "newer" 900 Duron?
And if you think thats stupid, check this price comparison out.
Athlon 1GHz (200) $142
Athlon 1GHz (266) $129
Athlon 1.2GHz (200) $157
Athlon 1.2GHZ (266) $169
At 1GHz, get the 266fsb and at 1.2GHz get the 200fsb? Strange!

Anyone know what the laws are concerning shiping computer parts. I'd be willing to send some over if the cost of shipping is reasonable. Can't see you folks paying that kind of price if we can work around it.

It is possible to send parts to the UK....you will have to mark them as gifts though so no tax is added this end. Tax is added on every import unless they are gifts or commercial samples. Postage will have to be worked out though, but UPS is usually pretty good. In fact, if there is anybody in the US who have paypal and are willing to send me a CPU (I'll pay for the CPU and shipping) I will see if this is a viable option.

If we can get an order together for more than one at a time it would help with the postage. Can't imagine it would cost that much for a small box with several cpu in it.

Yeah, and once in the UK, they can be sent on to the various parties. I think that when the quantities are upped, tax will be added. A box full of cpu's won't be regarded as a gift :)

So is that the reason for the price difference, taxes?
phil

Probably...17.5% goes to the government on pretty much everything.

Tax is part of it but the majority is that the importers/distributors/retailers think that their US dollar buy price should be converted to Sterling at 1:1 ratios :(
This applies to pretty much everything here. If it weren't for the fact that I can get UK hardware at trade and without VAT I would not have anything like the computers I'm sitting next to.

The offer stands. I think we could get away with 2 or 3 at a time. Let me know. :) I'll check into paypal and see how it works but I thought I read some where that they have a charge for converting currency.

The currency conversion is done by the Credit Card company...mine doesn't charge for this. I just send USD and the charges are done at this end by the CC company. It is really cool and very useful.
Can you get Athlon MP's over there yet....if so, I may have a couple :D ....just for testing purposes of course

Looks like a 1.0 mp would be about $170 and the 1.2 $180 + the ship to you.
phil
26th August 2001, 13:48
That's £125 for the 1.2Ghz. I can pick one up locally for £165. When the shipping from the US is added, it will be about the same. It may not be worth the hassle on that particular cpu.
If you are still willing and get paypal set up I will be happy to see how much it would be to get a 1.2MP to the UK just out of interest to see if it is viable.

I had an account with paypal and it doesn't look like I need to do anything else. Should be good to go. You might be right about not being much of a differance. Should waite for a few days to see how the intel price cuts effect the amd prices. ;)

I would be very interested in a 1.2MP. Anyone in the US interested in checking out shipping charges to the UK?

$40!
$40!
$40!
Ok, forget that! (or other words beginning with f)
I guess I'll just have to wait for the price here to come down.
The other option is to just get a cheap board with a fast duron. Will genome be much faster on an 800MHz Duron compared to an 800MHz Celeron?

Should be at least double the output. So yes, it'll be much faster!:D

Yup, I agree...the shipping takes it to a higher price than available locally :( Oh well, I have had to order the 1.2MP from scan.co.uk

What motherboard are you going to use, Phil? And post Genome speeds as soon as, OK?

Let's see....1.2MP is 163 plus 10 for fedex saver ( from distibutor to my house)...repackage send out US postal Global priority small is 5.75 with certification of delivery..sooo : 178.75 US * .693 (pound exchange rate) = 123.88 ( 3 days for fedex and 3 to5 for the post = 6 to eight days)
Anybody know the rate the bank charges to exchange currency? eg money order in pounds to us dollars?
What does that end up being cheaper than purchase in UK? 40 pounds ( or are you using Euros now)??

Hi Mike, I am going to run it on my MSI K7266 Pro with 512Mb Crucial PC2100. This is my current watercooled system that is running my 1Ghz T-Bird at 1575MHz :) With a bit of luck I should get a nice overclock from the MP.
As for the Genome speeds....this is the only reason I am buying the MP. I am doing it for the science of course :D

Well, I did (buy a Duron) yesterday.
I went to a computer fair with money burning a hole in my pocket (dumb move).
I picked up an Elite K7s5a and a Duron 800 for a combined price of £110 which allows me to still use my PC100 RAM from my Celeron. Once the Athlon 4 is cheaper I'll replace the Duron.
First looks are that it is slightly faster - does a 76aa in 13½ hours instead of 15½ hours - but that's without a fresh OS install. I'll do that in the next couple of days once I get hold ;) of a W98SE CD.
