View Full Version : A day in the life of a hard-core genomer

So here I sit, minding my own business, when a delivery truck rolls backward down the hill, smacks into a light post, shears it off (fiberglass) it falls, shorts out my power distribution panel, kills the steel door into my computer room and breaks half of my batteries. Sigh. the generator kicks in and immediate nukes its voltage regulator.
So I grab a spare regulator (yes, I'm paranoid) and skin three knuckles and break a socket replacing it. I take the cutoff saw to the power box and just rid PG&E from the picture. I called the city as well as PG&E - PG&E says the light pole is the city's problem - the city agrees, and swears it will be out of my garage by Wed. at the earliest. ARF? So I took the cutoff saw to the pole. Cut it up into nice three foot sections and put them out by the curb. PG&E shows up and throws a fit. Cops show up and throw a fit. City worker shows up and throws a fit. Wants to press charges for Destruction of City Property. "Send me the bill" I reply. Not good enough, thinks they. Soooo they file a police report. In the meantime PG&E starts throwing yet another fit - seems I cut off the distribution block on 'their' side of the demarcation. "It's on my property" replies I. They leave with power still out to my house, but everyone else in the neighborhood back on line. That's ok, I can wait them out. I have a large generator.
What a day - I have battery guts all over the garage floor, my power is coming from a generator and I have multiple municipalities wanting to sue me. (but not the dipwit who doesn't curb his tires...) Oh well - I guess that's why I have a law firm on retainer... Now if I can just get all the machines to politely come back up. Something to be said for having installed the Journaling Files System on them... Hey Dnar - if you haven't checked it out, do so... It's AWESOME. Three plus hours of down-time. My stats are going to stink... That's the real horror to the story. :D
I really really need a life. (And a couple hundred gallons of Diesel fuel and a new blade for my cutoff saw and a couple dozen new batteries...)
News-flash - PG&E must be back - my power panel in the computer room shows the grid back online and the generator trying to recharge batteries that no longer exist... Guess I'd better go cut that before I lose another regulator. Should put a sign on the garage door so my sister doesn't park in the acidic gel, too...
Thanks for letting me vent, all... I feel much better now... :p :D

Sorry for all your troubles. But if it will make you feel any better, I was having a bad day until I read this. My day does not even come close.
Sorry again Jodie. :(

Thanks, Sig! It's really not so bad... The kitty-litter trick is working well on the battery goo... I pay people to get me out of all the trouble I get myself into, so it's really a non-issue... :D
Why is your day going poorly? [comfort!]

Thanks for the comfort. It just seems like one of those days that everything I touch...I break......(course I can fix it too) but who as the time. Also Aunt flo is visiting for a few days.

Don't forget the .50 BMG! I want to see if any city employees stand up to it better than the ST225 did... [ROFL!] :D
No worries, the network is back online, the generator is again sleeping peacefully, and I found a hazardous waste company to come clean up the polluted kitty litter absorbing the battery goo... It's all kinda amusing when you think about it... :D
Thanks, though! I appreciate the sentiment!

i'd be very pissed at the city. Why would they care if you cut up a damaged pole on your property? i local police officer told me that if city stuff like poles and sign fall INTO YOUR YARD AND ARE DAMAGED the item that fell is legally yours. So the wind pulls up a street sign... me has a streetsign in basement, neighbor has a stop sign :) SOmene plowed into the stop sign in the winter... the pole was flat to the ground :) we had to remove it ourselves and call the city hall to get another one put in :D but i guess you could say I live in the country city.. A suburb i guess. Not big enough yards to be country, not city enough to be city
The city should thank you for removing the pole...
PG&E welll........... ummmm no comment there
My house's wiring is all inside, id on't see how or where Ohio Edison could call any of of it theirs considering it was all put in by my dad or the person who lived here before us....... The line comes in, goes to a self installed box.. and goes from there.
battery acid = bad :)

It wasn't their truck - it was a third-party- A delivery truck/courior.
Their p1ssy about my chopping up their light pole into bite-sized pieces for them... (Hey, it was in MY garage) Shrug. Like I say - That's what I pay attornys for... It's their problem now, not mine...

ROFL! The cutoff saw I used is actually state property - I climb occassionally with Search and Rescue, especially in the winter up around Truckee, lost hikers and skiers and such... It's an awesome saw, cut a car in half in about 20 seconds and come back for more...:D :D :D (And I was wearing my not-so-uber-fem Soloman hiking boots at the time, as I was about to go out for a hike, too... Sigh. )

I lived in a squat in Kennington SE11 for a while. The elderly couple in the ground floor flat used to beat me up on a daily basis. Its been 15 years but if they're still breathing, they're fierce and stealthy, like a Pinto with a V8 stuffed under the hood. We could send them around.
I was working for Computer Cab as a "telephonist." Aside from the dispatchers (former drivers), I was the only guy who worked there. I did well. The American accent sounded efficient, apparently. I was quickly promoted to the lofty position of "ring back girl," in charge of telling people that their cab, already late, would be another 20 minutes. I loved that job.

Hmm, I broke down in Kennington at 2am once. Not a pleasant wait for the AA (and that's not short for Alcoholics Anonymous for you Merkans)
