What distro would be good for a monitorless, console only G@H box? Redhat with no extra goodies?
I'll need the following
telnet server
Samba
webmin
maybe lm_sensors
G@H client
This will be going on an HDD bigger than 840mb (most liekly a 1.5gb, i'm not sure if it works or not)

Just load up your red hat cd's and choose the customised package...now choose what you want and don't want. Speak to dnar...he was messing with a very stripped down Linux distro (klinux) but I think it will require a lot of fettling to get running on your system.

LOL! Dainty???
Ok peeps, this is what I have been busy building, a small diskless distro designed for monitor/diskless clusters, with:
- RAMDISK operation
- NFS (G@H clients / work located on a central server)
- Telnet daemon
All you will need for each cluster node is a mobo, cpu, ram, NIC and PSU. Add to this one server/gateway, this may be your desktop workstation.
It is up and running, just a few issues to sort, like library issues with the client... Soon, soon, I promise!
I have not decided if this should be kept TGC inhouse, or should I release the final product to the general genome community. If it is released public, I am up for a lot more work, in support etc... Time I just dont have at the present. (X-Calibur, MechCD, kirek, phil interested maybe in helping get together a Web page, to provide support and download hosting???? Maybe a forum too??? ). Opinions welcomed.
Names? Chrunchix, GAHnix, Clustix, TGCnix, Darnix, Geneix.... :D

ROTFLMAO :D
Oh I just knew that would get a reaction.......
Darn Nice Accomplishment Really (opps....did that spell Dnar)
I thought about "headless linux computing enviroment" but the only short version of that I came up with was "HeadLiCE" .
It did make me chuckle for a bit but I figured, "not only no, but H*** NO)...:D

Dnar: Can you comment on the ability of GANnix to run the current FAH client?

Hey Bruce. Sure thing, can you wait a few days? I just finished a 13 hour day in the office. I'll load it onto one of my GAHnix nodes this weekend and report back. Currently my farm is in peices and off, but it's going back together slowly.
My guess is it will work fine, if not it will be due to a library dependancy that I should be able to sort out, have done in the past.

Ok, I got bored. How much free memory does FAH 5.02 require Bruce? It runs, grabs a new core and work unit, then dies without much usefull info!
root@node3> ./FAH502-Linux.exe

I'm not sure if I know.
In my windoze system, the console client says it has a VM size of 6,648K (though it's only using 420K ATM. (Not that you care, but the GUI client says 3,776K / 16,742K) I'm currently running the new LargeWU option on this machine and core_78 is taking 128,224K out of 171,760K) A more realisitic core requirement is 2,384K / 67,712 K for Tinker and there's a similar figure for standard WUs in Gromacs.
My Win98 box has 320MB total RAM (less whatever Bill Gates wants) and doesn't actively page - - but that's because the core has a working set around 10 MB.
I have no idea how much is needed during initialization, but you'll probably need more paging space too, and that's something you probably don't have.

Hrm, I checked the library requirements of the client and I have all the libraries required (or at least the libraries that the client is reporting using "ld"... It could be RAM, I'll drop more RAM into that node on the weekend and re-test.
BTW, FAH3 ran fine on GAHnix with 64MB of RAM. Maybe Vijay could help?
