Every year or so I like to see how Microsoft is doing in its attempt to make a desktop operating system as usable as Linux. Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, with Service Pack 2, is a tremendous improvement over previous Windows versions when it comes to stability and appearance, but it still has many glitches that keep it from being competitive with GNU/Linux for everyday users, including a tedious installation procedure, lack of productivity software included with the operating system, hardware compatibility problems, and a price so much higher than any of the Linux distributions I've tested lately that I don't feel this product is a good value for most home or small office users.

Sorry, but pot kettle!

"a tedious installation procedure" Every Linux installation I have done has been tedious. In fact every software installation I have ever done has been tedious. How could it not be? Is it supposed to show me my favourite movie at the same time? A Playboy slideshow perhaps?

"lack of productivity software included with the operating system" Hmm. What's Outlook Express? (Other than crap, of course!) And what about how every niche software manufacturer attacks M$ every time they extend their Operating System!? Windows is just an OS as the EU recently reminded M$ forcing them to produce a distro that doesn't include Media Player. Linux can include apps because the software vendors aren't threatened by Linux. Wait until they are and see what happens.

"hardware compatibility problems" You have got to be kidding me! I'm laughing so hard I can't even be bothered to respond to this!

"a price so much higher than any of the Linux distributions". Well duh! And yet they still outsell all the Linux distros combined...
