Virus hunters have discovered a new Trojan that encrypts files on an infected computer and then demands $300 in ransom for a decryption password.

Unless the password is different every time, it will be on the Anti-Virus sites within days.

I've now seen 3 or 4 different versions of that scam on client machines. Several of them go and change the desktop to a warning about being infected.. and another had an icon in the task bar that kept popping up and informing you that you were infected. *grin*

You can't brute force a 10 character zip password? Guess they didn't expect someone to have the ability to do a search for Zip encryption cracking tools.

I've gone through those before. Never had to clean up a linux box, but most of the people I know run Windows. Best tool I've used was Webroot Spysweeper. It's gotten perfect results on the first run through. $30 USD, but well worth it to me. One pass and a reboot.

Now that the advertisement is over, the best bet is to surf for **** on someone else's machine.

Bunch of windows machines. Never had a virus or a trojan. But then I'm really paranoid. ;)
