It appears i have had a bad batch of IBM 30 Gig HDS. this is the 2nd one to develope bad sectors on me.

My system here is set up with a PowerPal UPS. It cant be powerspikes, at least from the Wall Socket.

Also, I have an ATA 100 controler. for the disk. it is not built into the mother board. I dunno whats up. Is it just bad disks? or somethin up with my system?

Mate I have one with no problems, but I have seen many reports of bad units on the O/C and Linux NG's. I have also seen numerous people claim that these reports are just rumours... Well, send em back and see!

My choice is Quantum, I know IBM can run circles around the Quantum but my Quantums are still running:D I think IBM likes the rep of being fast and everyone wants one so they are starting to dump them out too fast and not assuring quality control

My choice has always been quantum, I have Quantum 120, 540, 1.2G and 10G drives that all run fine, the 120 is now 10 years old. My last purchase was on IBM 30G however. They are faster, quieter and everyone I spoke to, recommended them. BTW, Quantum have been bought out by Maxtor I beleive.

Yes they have, I'm not sure how that will affect their product. I do have a 20GB Maxtor that is fairly decent and hasn't given me any problems so they may still be OK

I have had fairly good luck with Western Digital. I said "fairly" because I have had a few of them die. Most were under 3 years old when they crapped out. I'm starting to hear bad things about the IBM drives and bad blocks. I have a fairly new one doing bad blocks....not good! I have two that are not...time will tell.

I must be lucky then so far. I have 2x15Gb 75GXP's, 2x30Gb 75GXP's, 1x40Gb 60GXP and an older 20Gb deskstar. They are all running fine (for now)

Check your 12 volt line, if it's sagging you are risking HDD failure
