Well I can guarantee there will be a few beers supped :D

That was one MAJOR grudge match!

I was at work in the Intensive Care Unit, and no less than four of the ventilated, sedated patients had portable TV's imported to the bottom of their beds, at their relatives requests. They believed the match would contribute to the wellbeing of thier loved ones. dunno if it worked, but I think I nearly woke a couple when the second goal went in :D

From what I heard it was the German's doing most of the rioting (that was last night though, might have changed now).

Like Chas says, it's our National game! Besides, passions allways run high for England/Germany matches, ...nearly always metion the "world Cup" in the same sentance and the matches are usually unbelievably close.

Believe it or not, the rivalry dates back to WWII. Both England and Germany dropped 100's of thousands of tons of bombs on each other. Berlin was almost completely flattened by British bombs, London took a thrashing too. nearly every English house had an air-raid shelter in the back garden. Only 20 years after the end of WWII, fans who had been bombing and shooting each other previously, cheered to watch England beat Germany to take the World Cup - ever since, the rivalry has been ferocious.

Even now, the British chant is "two world wars, ...one world cup!". Sung by 40,000 fans after a few beers, add a bit of bad luck for one team or the other and you've got a riot!

What I don't get it that people are saying England can now win the World Cup because we beat Germany.

They were crap, and we weren't much better. During the first half we only managed to string together 3 or 4 passes. Second was better, but not by much.

Germany just played crap.

Yeah, the ashes runs a damned close second believe me :)

Fact is, we're bloddy useless at cricket! Whereas, we're actually pretty good at footy - we've come close a time or two, usually to have our chances scuppered by an unlucky penalty shootout against the Germans ;)

:( :( :(

One man's party is another man's misery. Don't get me wrong, Engeland beating Germany really REALLY cheered me up after the miseral display the Netherlands' footy team put up in their match.

They never played a good match in the qualification round at all and the result is that we won't participate in the World Championships next year. I'm really p*ss*d!!! They can all play very well as individuals but as a team they s*ck!!! Bunch of overpayed spineless weaklings!

Did I mention I'm p*ss*d???

I will be cheering Engerland-Engerland-Engerland next year!

D'ont worry mate cheer along with us,

We have had plenty of experience on missing out on World Cups in the past.....
The worst was when the media here tried to get England fans to support Ireland when they qualified..... and we didn't!!!!!

No bloody chance in this household! and as for Scotland well words fail me...... :D

Universal Pictures announced today they plan to make a film of the momentous football match that took place on Saturday. "Five-One" is the tentative title of what could be next year's big summer hit, depicting the American national soccer team's stunning victory over Germany.

Nicholas Cage heads an all star cast as the captain of the brave US Soccer team haunted by the trauma of losing in the 2000 World Cup final on penalties and the death of his best friend in a riot caused by English football hooligans, and finds love in the arms of a female sports journalist played by Julia Roberts. Mel Gibson is the no-nonsense Swedish coach who leads them to glory, with Keanu Reeves, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Will Smith playing some of Cage's heroic team mates. Jeremy Irons is set to star as Sir Nigel Villiers-Smythe, the dastardly Englishman who coaches the German team and forces them to play with poisoned-tipped studs to try and cheat the heroic American team out of victory.

Director Steven Spielberg defended the film-makers' decision to focus on the American contribution to the victory over Germany and accusations of inaccurate and even imagined events in the story, saying, "Obviously we've had to take some artistic licence to make the story work on film, but I hope that what we produce will be true to the spirit of what happened on that famous night."
