I know alot of you run many pc's with the client on them. i am just curious how many you all have and the stats on them. DOesnt it get a little expensive to be setting up so many systems? In our house i have a PC my mom and my sister do, thats 3 total. ones 900 ones 1000 the third is 233 mhz. unfortunatly i dont think i can run the client on these systems. they are never on all day, and my mom dont like me messin with hers...i "break it" or something ;) but who does she call when it dont work? yea you know the number :p. If yall got secrets about some of this stuff let me know :)

LOL! You need to re-educate your mom. Tell her about the damage she is doing to her PC by turning it on and off each time she needs it! Accelerated hard disk wear, PSU turnon shock.... The list goes on.
Ok, so now you have convinced her to leave it running. Next, you need to hide the client! Hideit (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Sector/2035/hideit.html) :D :biggroin: :D

Yup, it does get a little expensive. I am currently running:
Dual PIII 700's @ 1050MHz (512Mb RAM) and Win2K Server
Celeron II 600 @ 1035MHz (256Mb RAM) and Win2K pro
Tbird 1Ghz @ 1575MHz (512Mb DDR-RAM) and Red Hat Linux 7.1
TBird 1Ghz @ 1533MHz (256Mb RAM) and Red Hat 7.1
I am about to add a 1.2Ghz Athlon 4 to replace the Celeron system. All machines are controlled from my main workstation which is the dual processor machine. I run a script on the Linux boxes (courtesy of dnar) that will check to see if the clients are running every 15 mins. If not, the work unit will be compressed and stored in a "crashed" directory. The client will then be re-started with the -clear switch. This way I really never have to worry about them crashing and me not noticing :D

Medic has a page http://home.mmcable.com/babybeard/totalpower.htm
needs updated a bit but will give you an idea as to the power part. If you have specific questions fire away and I'm sure you'll get some answers :D

Because the CII isn't very good for running genome. For the price of a board and CPU, he can have 400% genome performance form that computer. It's alot more money to build a whole nother system. Also power consumption wise, upgrading is much more cost effective then keeping the CII online. Answer your question?:D

You can also scare her with ELECTROMIGRATION, always THE MOST convincing argument when converting someone to 24h uptime....
Cheers!

LOL...don't worry Alfred, every little helps. It is just cost effective for me to sell my Abit VH6T and CII 600 to help pay for the T-Bird and new mobo. For a minimal outlay, I can at least triple the output of that one machine. I am trying to get as much production as cheaply as possible :)

Hi Alfred,
This (http://www.thegenomecollective.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=629) is how the majority of people feel regardless of how many WU's you contribute.
Anyway, people with "farms" have to worry about things like power consumption. Maintaining 10 active G@H clients is also time consuming.
All in all, big crunchers don't attract nearly as many potential crunchers as an active board does. So by just posting, you're attracting new people.

There's a long thread HERE (http://www.thegenomecollective.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=96) about a lot of the peoples systems.
Even if they aren't on all day they could still crunch some genes. Have you tried explaining what the project is and what it is about? Try showing her this Man's reason (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/genomeathome/message/1576?threaded=1) why he got into it. You might go on to explain that the client just uses cpu time that would otherwise be totally unused. It doesn't really affect the performance of a system, unless it's has very little ram. Good luck, you should try asking, the worst that could happen is a no answer. (and if that happens you can get it to run fairly well hidden ;) )

The old adage 'the best system to use is the one you have' still has a lot going for it. In fact, the two boxen on G@h are the two we use here: the PII350 is my new workhorse (replacing the P200) and the Cel366 is my girlfriend's machine - her workplace is home for 2 days/week.
And yes, power consumption is an issue! I am still in doubt what to do with the P200, it's hardly a good DC box is it?
OTOH, maintaining DC farms can be a hobby in itself and thus is bound to cost money by default. Running old boxes just for fun can play a part there too.
Running my own DC farm is out of the question though. Home budget doesn't allow it atm, as the missus tends to point out whenever I get home with a brand new glossy brochure! LOL - But I gotta love her, she even lets me use HER computer, the doll! :p
At some point this 'power issue' might come in handy though - <EG>
Cheers all - crunch on with all you got!

I think I'm up to 23 boxes in the basement...
Somewhere around 20GHz and a US $300+/mo electric bill.
But I'm in complete control, I can stop anytime I want. It's not an addiction, I've got a handle on it, yeah, that's the ticket....
I'll stop at 25 boxen...that's a nice number, 25...yeah, I can stop at 25...no problem.

Actually, I paid $5 each for about half of my farm. They're discarded office machines and are pretty slow (P-133). Unfortunately, I do pay a bigger electric bill instead.
I've been thinking about buying a fast machine with the money I can save in electricity by shutting them down.

I know the feeling. I taped a couple of credit statements next to my monitor. It sure has helped control the urges. ;)
I've got about 19ghz across 20 boards at home. Last months electric bill was $500+. Last years was around $250. The power for the machines isn't the whole extra $250 I'm sure at least a third of it is cooling costs. My A/C didn't shut off for more than half an hour last month. My office still hasn't been below 82F in months. It hit 90 a few times before I installed a couple of dual window fans exausting the heat. Can't wait for winter. :D

Wow, that's a neat idea, maybe I could get down to a 20 box habit then. ;) Thanks for the advice. :D
