Today has been one of those days. It started out well, installing an additional drive to the Tbird, to be used for additional kernel source trees. All went well with the installation, until......
I had backed up the main drive, like a good lil sys admin, booted using a root-and-boot floppy, and started to re-organise my ext2 partitions. All going fine so far. Ok, new hard drive installed, formatted, primary drive partitions resized, new drive added to /etc/fstab. Time to reboot and restore the backup.
System boots no problem. Insert backup...... Backup is corrupt!!!!!! Arrgggggggggggggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!
$#!@*&!@$^!~@#~!^#*^~# and other words come out.... Kick cat!!! Throw all objects within 5 feet across the room, I feel a little better, but I have this hot flush and funny churnings in my tummy......
I have lost three weeks worth of business entries, and my G@H units since my last dump on the 16th August.... It has taken me 6 hours to re-enter my accounting info (thankyou hard copies). I cant beleive I did this. Firkin backup system is U/S. Time to start verifying my backups, I have no backups since the first week in August...

Forget the accounting stuff, damn...that was over 1000wu's!!! What with Dave's HD probs and your backup probs we must have lost close on 8000wu's. This couldn't have come at a worse time.
Oh yeah, I hope you get your other stuff sorted out

Man that really sucks.....had a similar experience when our office was broken into last year and all computers stolen....also all the backup tapes and jaz disks that were supposed to be kept offsite....our only backup was on my laptop and that was 8 months old......mate that cost us heaps over and above the cost of new computers due to lost work.....
Cant see how I can be of assistance....but if there is any way I can help let me know...:( :(

OMG is all I can say.
Nonetting can be dangerous.
Dave had a similar problem? Oh shit !!!!
Sorry to hear about that unlucky twist of fate m8... really sorry.
Go buy yourself a new putter to ease the pain.... my women does that all the time with clothing.... why should we not?
Good luck in restoring your stuff. But don't you usually backup everything overnight everynight? I recall you saying something like that in a previous conversation....?
All the best

Hey Dnar, don't throw out those backup tapes... I've got a friend over at a data recovery place I used to work for... They're AWESOME, let me have him take a look at them.

I feel for ya mate. :( I did the same thing when I installed my last HD. Only it was a corrupt ghost file. I learned the hard way to check the backup file before deleting the partition. :( :(

Naw, completely different! He's the Penguin who cried Disk Crash. Not even related to each other. You're confusing "pig" and "penguin" again, I think. The wolf was after the PIGS and the boy pointed at the dog-like-thing and yelled "WOLF" and the pigs said "DUH! Thanks for stating the obvious, moronboy..." Or something like that - anyway, bird-like-thing-penguin and disk-like-thing-crash. Very different 'animals'...

Dear Uber Fem.....
It has come to my attention that you believe that I have somehow confused a large flightless bird with a wolf. I have confussed nothing! I was speaking in generalities. Dnar claimed that his backup failed causing the loss of valuable data. Many of us felt bad for him because we have all been there at one time or another. You even offered data recovery services via a friend...
I made my comment to reflect that should Dnar try his "lost data" stunt in the future... I (we) might be less receptive and less supportive of his loss because he fooled us once before.
Therefore, my inclusion of the tale of "the boy who cried wolf" is in fact 100% relevant and not confused with any flightless bird.

I did in fact inform both Jodie and Will that this was a stunt (as I did with ALL that responded to the original post). Pure propoganda for the pirates, all part of the game....

Thanks for the scolding....
I was replying to the Uber Fem in serious jest! It is between her over reaction and my foolishness. I can be as foolish as I desire.
Now you have over reacted as well! Chill bro...... Sometimes I am so full of s**t that I cannot see the light of day..... Sometimes humor can be very subtle.....
Unfaithfully yours...

I'm not serious M8... I still think it was sly and hilarious. I just can't believe I fell for it worse than the pirates :) Of course, if any of us were actually thinking straight, we never would have believed you could be caught with your pants down like that.
A lot of people don't do sequential backups, but I would imagine you do :) Anybody with a little scripting ability doesn't even need to buy software for it in Linux.
