Hehe, it seems I just can't stress this machine into submission:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/phil.harling/images/taskman.gif
Running:
2xGenome Clients
ICQ
Winamp
Photoshop 6 (with 389Mb .tif image open)
Bladenc (encoding a full cd to MP3)
Spooling the image from Photoshop to the printer.
Funny thing is, it didn't even slow down!! I love dual processors :D

try burning a 12x CD-R at the same time genome is running... Haven't had one survive yet under windows. Moved the burner to a linux box, everything's fine... (both duals)

My 1.7 P4 rig will burn 'em at 12x with genome and Autocad running, sometimes Photoshop is going too. It may be a SCSI burner though, not exactly sure what's all in that DELL.
My 1 ghz rig at home has never had any problems, but it's a Plextor 8-2-20 on an Adaptec 29160. I'm still not too fond of IDE burners.

nod. I've got two IDE burners at home. Some day I'll throw them out and put SCSI in there... I have a SCSI 160 Plextor at work that just SCREAMS!

My 16X burner runs all the time while Genome is running. I only use Ahead Nero Burning CD ROM. It always works!!!

Adaptec is pure crap on windows. Roxio is just a name change....

I agree... and it's a separate public entity now, so don't let them hear you say that!:p ;)

I already emailed them and told them so...that a simple name change would make no difference. Crap is crap, call the product whatever you like.
Started with my old 8X that shippend with Adaptec Easy CD Coaster Maker. It will run with Win NT...it will not run with Win2K. Call Adaptec and they ask, 'did your software come with a cd burner? Yes I said. "Oh, you will have to contact the maker of your cd burner." Mitsumi said, "Don't call us, we didn't make the software!" No duh!
The perfect Catch 22!
Chucked Easy CD Coaster Maker and downloaded Nero Burning and have never looked back! Adaptec will never have my business again....

Don't hold back.. Tell us what you *really* think. ;)
I had a trashiba cd writer - misplaced the software. Wrote to trashiba, they said "We can only ship the software with OEM product. We can't send you a copy." I replied "here's my serial no. and registration number, see, I really do own it." They said "call adaptec" which I did - got a similar reply to yours. So low-and-behold, two weeks later I found the software in a stack of CDs. Posted the software to umpteen sites and wrote a script to post the link to Trashiba's forum every time they deleted the message... Still going, as far as I know... They block the IP I appear to come from every chance they get [shrug] Like THAT's going to stop me...
I ended-up buying some "QuickCD" or some garbage for $10 on the clearance rack. Works fine...

What, you don't use that beautifully working, flawless packet writing, Direct CD??!! ;)
I've still got my 4x read 2x write SCSI Matishutia (sp?) that came in my first, very own, machine. A gateway G6-200-XL  200mhz P-Pro, what else. :D Can't believe I burnt 100's of cds at 45min a piece.
I still use EZ-CD Creator 4 for audio, and CDR-Win. Never really did get into Nero.

That's hilarious Jodie. Another OEM adaptec story...
A friend of mine was given a Ioemga CDRW by his mother-in-law last Christmas. Calls me up and says "don't work, help".
I go to his place and the CDRW appears to be functional, but the system crashes any time CDC is started up. Go to Iomega and no info. E-mail Iomega and they say it's Adaptecs problem. Go to Adaptec and they say it's Iomega's problem.
No software upgrade, no support, no ASPI layer upgrade, what a waste of time! When software will not run with the hardware it is shipped with, that is very sad.

Sometimes you just have to call these idiots an the carpet and have that "come to Jesus" discussion.

Yup. What really stings is being on the phone with Roxio's CTO and not being able to tell him off because they're a potential client... :(

Easy...I do it all the time. I never stop any progs for anything. I just carry on as usual. I have a Plexwriter 12/10/32A and the rest of my stuff is SCSI (10x DVDROM, 40x Plextor)
I love Plextor stuff....can't wait for their SCSI DVDROM :)
