Avatars more info please

I've figured out how to set my avatar, but the one I had is no longer available ( it was that superman - Clark Kent thing). So...

How do I load a custom avatar? ie send it up to a mod to load for me?

What parms are full acceptable? 8bit 16 bit..gif, jpg...30 x 30 or 48 x 48?

I just might need to go avatar shopping or maybe I'll create one of my very own....

I can't get the old board to even tick, is there a way i could get my old rehat logo avatar back? I don't want to be a penguin..... i want a penguin with a redhat! (No not that either, i just want the rehat dude)
