View Full Version : staffproof G@H

I will install G@H on all of the computers at work if there is a way to make it foolproof for my staff. It has to be hidden (an icon in the system tray would be ok) and has to shut down automatically when the computer is shut down. It will run on PII and PIII machines in an NT4 sp6 environment. The add-on program to do this will have to be stable.
Is it possible? Are we there yet with any of the new programs? Failing that, everyone gets the S@H cli client with setispy.

EM2 will hide ghclient, restart it on bootup, shut it down on shutdown. It will sit in systray, or will even hide itself, if you're worried about users who meddle.
It's not rock solid stable, but it is close. I've had most of my troubles trying to monitor network machines but if it is configured for local operation only, it is quite close to your requirements.

EM2 dont shut down the client for me. the option is set, but it just makes it visible =\. Either way, i am workin on a VB exe that will boot the client at windows startup, then hide it, and exits. on windows 2000, when you shut down, the client just closes up. =\ try it on 98/95/ME if its the same then this program is ideal. it will be gone from ram and everything else. Basicly all you will have to do is Install the client on each computer, copy your config file to them, (Will save you from setting up each client) and copy the exe of this program into the directory, and create a shortcut to it in the startup folder on your start menu. Or i could just make it put something in the registry. either way it will start on boot. but the startmenu idea saves your registry from extra clutter. Let me know. If ya want it ill perfect it. right now its got a glitch (Dont hide the client when windows it booting ;|) but thats super easy to fix. let me know and ill put in the 20 seconds it takes ;)

Thanks for that Azz. ....Is the client hidden on shutdown with no windows warnings??
Cant wait to try it out on monday.
Azzuron

Depends on windows. My program basicly loads up executes the client, waits for it to appear, hides it exits. then what ever windows does with the client on shutdown is windows business. on 2k, it just closes. i dunno about the 9x series. let me know what happens =)
WOOWEE Post 50!

heres a curly one for you....
any way to hide it so totally that it doesnt show when doing the ol' ctrl-alt-del and bringing up the applications window?
running as a win98 service would be pretty cool..

didnt know windows 98 was smart enough to be able to run services ;P not like i ever used it. I dont know any way to do it. What is the name of the item in the task manager? i can probably change that to something else...

As you are running NT, why not run the client as a service? Firedaemon is a nice program that will add services for you easily. Grab it from: http://www.firedaemon.com/

Yes, I have an application around here some where that doesn't show up on the Win98 task manager. I havn't a clue how he did it, but it can be done.
There are a lot more things shown by wintop than by task manager -- which are essentially running as win98 services.

Go to the system in the windows directory and find the file
Conagent.exe right click on it and go to property
remove the mark at warn if active
and the warning is gone

I use a prog called "stealth" that I got from a link on OCN.....its so simple....just place in g@h folder & shortcut in startup.....will try to find the thread but man its hard to keep track over there.......their threads move so damn FAST!!!
I've used EM2, window etc & all are great, but none totally hide the prog from the applications window...
Not trying to sound like a difficult sod here guys...only wondering if anyone had found a better solution.
I certainly have enough info here to get some more (at least part time) crunching going on

Phil, your tip just added 4 PIII 733Mhz machines to the Collective. Gotta love NT services. The client is completely invisible except in the task manager processes list, where it is happily ticking away.
I'll add three or four more when I get permission from the users (my office coordinator has fallen in love with seti--genome is a harder sell).
Azzuron, I'm going to need your proggie for my win98 machine at home.... Would I just run it as a .exe in the startup file?
YESSSS!!!!

I had to cool my jets a bit. I finally arranged for IS to install GroupWise on all of the stroke center computers. They will use us as a pilot for a possible roll-out to the entire hospital center. They are hoping to convince the hospital center administration (can you say "Larry, Curly, and Moe?") its worth the cost.
Our email client now is ccMail. There is no support for any scheduling program except some crap from Lotus so our stroke center scheduling has been through the Palm Desktop using Network Hotsync to make the secretary's computer a "server." We get by but dang. We deserve better. I busted my ass to convince IS we would be the right group to use as a model for GroupWise (they picked it, not me).
The thing is, when IS shows up to install GroupWise next week and finds the CPU in use 100% of the time, they are going to freak. I don't want to deal with the fallout.
So I have installed genome as a service everywhere but have kept it disabled for now.... :D

This works. Actually it is probably better to copy conagent.exe to the genome directory first, and then edit that copy. That allows you to kill ghclient without making it the default for your entire system.
